Gwengwe withdraws from Malawi squad after first call-up

Newport County say the forward remains committed to representing Malawi, but will not join the squad for this international window.

Shaquille Gwengwe has withdrawn from Malawi’s squad for the forthcoming international window, Newport County confirmed on Wednesday 23 September, a week after announcing his first call-up.

The club says the decision followed discussions with the Football Association of Malawi and refers to the circumstances surrounding this window. It has not given a more specific reason. Newport says Gwengwe remains committed to playing for Malawi in future.

What changes for Newport

When Newport announced the call-up on 16 September, the club said Gwengwe would miss the League Two games against Grimsby Town and Gillingham, plus the Football League Trophy meeting with Plymouth. The withdrawal changes that international commitment, but the new statement does not confirm his selection or fitness for any of those matches.

Four goals since his summer move

Newport’s latest statement credits Gwengwe with four goals since joining from Poole Town. Its earlier announcement recorded those four goals in seven appearances as of 16 September and noted his August League Two Player of the Month nomination. The seven-appearance total is from that earlier announcement, not an updated season tally.
