Nyakuhwa turns first Newport start into a goal and an assist

Tanatswa Nyakuhwa made his first Newport County start count with a goal and an assist in the 2–0 win at Swindon Town, then put the emphasis on the team rather than his player-of-the-match recognition.

Winning the ball, then finishing the job

Speaking to Newport’s official website, the winger said: “I just want to play my part in helping the team. The team is the main thing.” He described wanting a goal after remembering a chance he had at the same ground last season. The club credited his work winning possession high up the pitch in the move for the opener.

Newport did more with less possession

API-Football’s match record credits Nyakuhwa with the assist for Gerard Garner’s fourth-minute opener and the second goal in the 80th minute. Newport had 40% possession but produced 14 shots to Swindon’s 12, with five on target against one. That contrast shows how little Swindon’s larger share of the ball translated into shots that tested the goalkeeper. It does not establish that Newport will be as effective in the next game.

Wales duty comes next

Nyakuhwa now turns to Wales Under-21 duty. In the club interview, he said he was looking forward to representing his country and returning with performances to build on. Newport has also published the full interview on its official video channel.
