The Pontypridd signalling fault has come off TfW's live page, after a day of cancellations in three valleys

Transport for Wales spent Thursday cancelling trains through Pontypridd, where the Treherbert, Aberdare and Merthyr Tydfil lines meet, and put buses on all three. The entry is no longer on its live page, and TfW has given no all clear.

A fault with the signalling system at Pontypridd cancelled trains through the town for most of Thursday. Pontypridd is the junction where Transport for Wales's Treherbert, Aberdare and Merthyr Tydfil lines all meet on the way to Cardiff Central, which is why one fault took out three valleys at once. TfW said services "will be reduced through the area until the signalling system is working normally", with cancellations both ways, and pushed its estimate back from 14:00 to the end of the day. TfW said technicians from Network Rail or Amey Infrastructure were on their way. The entry is no longer on TfW's live service status page, and TfW has published no all clear.

The buses TfW put on

TfW ran road transport between Treherbert and Pontypridd, provided by Bluebirds, at no extra cost, with the first service at 06:40 and buses then leaving Treherbert at 10 and 40 minutes past the hour. A second operator, the bus firm Teulu, shuttled between Pontypridd and Aberdare and between Pontypridd and Merthyr Tydfil. TfW warned that road transport takes longer than the train. TfW also listed local Stagecoach buses carrying rail passengers at no extra cost, on three groups of routes: the 95, 113, 60 and 61 between Aberdare and Pontypridd; the 78, 79, 81, X4, 60 and 61 between Merthyr Tydfil and Pontypridd; and the 120, 121, 124, 130 and 132 between Treherbert and Pontypridd. Show your train ticket to the driver. TfW said its own Pay As You Go could not be used on those local operators, so check the fare with the driver.

What to do

TfW has not said the signalling is fixed, so check your own train with TfW before you travel. If you arrive at your destination more than 15 minutes later than scheduled, you can claim through Delay Repay, the industry compensation scheme. If your train is cancelled or delayed and you decide not to travel because of that, TfW says you can claim a fee-free refund on the unused ticket from wherever you bought it.

Correction, 3 September 2026: an earlier version listed five Pontypridd departure times, the 06:01, 06:03, 06:32, 06:33 and 06:36. They were not in this piece's fact pack and have been removed.
