Council approves Ysgol Meidrim closure at the end of December

Carmarthenshire County Council has approved the closure of Ysgol Meidrim, with the decision due to take effect on 31 December 2026. The authority announced the outcome on 15 October after a full council meeting the previous day.
What happens to current pupils
From 1 January 2027, the council says existing pupils will transfer to Ysgol Hafodwenog or Ysgol Griffith Jones. Transfers are subject to parental preference and the council’s admissions arrangements, rather than an unconditional offer of either school.
Future catchment arrangements
For future pupils from January, the Meidrim catchment will be absorbed into the existing catchments of Ysgol Hafodwenog, Ysgol Griffith Jones and Ysgol Bancyfelin. This is a separate arrangement from the two transfer schools named for children currently enrolled.
The council’s reasons
The authority cites low pupil numbers, spare places, children attending elsewhere, limited projected growth and a forecast budget deficit. Its announcement does not give a pupil count, percentage of empty places or deficit value. No individual child or family is identified in this report.
